What do you see as the biggest challenge the pest prevention industry faces?
The pest control industry has historically been under-prioritized by the food industry. It's the pest control industry's fault. This is due to the competitive nature of pest control companies, who often under-evaluate the complexity of pest problems and under-price jobs. This forces service technicians to have inadequate time in accounts to truly educate customers and solve and prevent pest issues. For these reasons, I find that the pest industry is doing itself and the food industry a disservice. I started this company to bridge the gaps between the pest control and the food industry.

My full name is Samuel A. Oliver III. Named after my father and grandfather and my oldest is Samuel A. Oliver IV. The A. was supposed to stand for Alexander, but they abbreviated it on my grandfather’s birth certificate so it would fit. Which legally made his, and thus our, middle name A. Needless to say, this was something I had to explain at the beginning of every school year as the teacher would assume, until she heard the full story, that I just didn’t like my middle name.

What is your favourite memory from your pest prevention career at FDB?
Being a native Rhode Islander, driving for more than 20 minutes is absolute torture, but I’ve managed to use the time well I hope. But it’s those striking driving moments when the sky is dark but patches of silver and golden light flicker through the clouds and something dramatic like the Gloria of a Mozart mass comes over the radio which really lifts you up out of the grind.
What do you see as the biggest challenge the pest prevention industry faces?
I call it ‘disintegrated pest management,’ but it may be more specific to food and drug production than pest management in general. Pests are a test of any organisation, particularly because pests are adaptable and organisations are not. Pest management tends to cross across many different departments such as facilities, sanitation and often a general vendor contact and consequently communications do not necessarily reach anyone with authority to follow them. In an age where professionals jump roles and companies, institutional knowledge is not captured and documented and roles are often improvised and informal. Pests are what fill cracks in organizations.
What is a fun fact most people might not know about you?
I spent my entire 20s in Europe, mostly London -- studying, traveling, writing.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests?
I am a gamer, I enjoy PC games, board games and card games. I am a big believer in having a level playing field to showcase everyone’s ability equally.
What is the most common question you get from customers?
The question I get asked the most by customers, “is there’s anything I can do to keep rats from burrowing near my house?” I always suggest using crushed rock or sharp stone, trenching nine inches deep by two feet out from the foundation. Mulch is giving rodents an easy habitat to make.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is “Going Postal” by Terry Pratchett. My wife lent met the book when we were dating, and we bonded over the series. Our wedding cake was “The Luggage” from the first book, a sentient trunk.
What is your favorite memory from your pest prevention career at FDB?
My favorite memory from my career so far is deducing the path of a rat from the second floor kitchen of a restaurant to a burrow outside under a CO2 canister.
What do you see as the biggest challenge the pest prevention industry faces?
The biggest challenge I believe the pest industry faces is keeping the attention on investigation rather than the trap-line. Finding the origination of the pest, and resulting exclusion, will save the customer thousands of dollars than the pest’s constant removal.
